Peace for the New Year!

My Mother was a very creative, resourceful lady. Born in 1911 at Wetumka, Oklahoma; she lived through the great Dust Bowl and Depression. She traveled in covered wagons. She was the daughter of a migrant Sharecropper who lost her Mom at a very young age. She could make anything from Coconut Creme Pie to a beautiful landscape painted on a hand saw. Her gardens were incredible, full of vegetables and beautiful Roses. She raised chickens and could prepare one for a meal in minutes. She could do all of this while raising six children alone with a full time job.

She always insisted yellow roses stood for Peace. I realized today, after research, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the Yellow Rose of Texas. The original song dealt with a lady's love at the Battle of San Jacinto. The words were changed over time. However, florists today feel the yellow rose is a sign of friendship. If placed with a white rose, then it is offering a peaceful friendship! A single yellow rose is thought to represent jealousy! Oh my, how things grow and change. I will keep my Mother's teachings.

Today, I wish you peace for the New Year!

  3. A beautiful painting and beautiful sentiment. You know, it's so interesting how we each attach different meaning to things. We see the world from our own unique perspective. And we need to let everybody else see it from theirs. It's wonderful that you remember your mother's affection for the yellow roses and they have special meaning for you because of her. :)
